The GRRReatest!

This past week-end we went to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey "Zing, Zang, Zoom" circus in Everett. We took Wyatt, Finnley & Scout along with their Moms & Dads - Boy did we all have fun!

Before the show, we went back stage & saw all the elephants, horses & zebras that would be performing in the show. What fun that was! We were able to talk to the elephant handlers & find out a little bit about their grueling schedule. They're on the road for the greater part of a year, and several of the performers are married to other performers or members of the circus, so their lives are a bit more "normal". We found out the show and a lot of the entertainers travel via their circus train, made up of about 60 cars. The other members travel by RV. They also stay on site so that they are close at hand to care for the animals.

The show was non-stop action, keeping the kids, big & little, entertained for the duration of the 2 hour show! It was so much fun to see the excitement & awe in the little ones faces. I think they'll remember it for a long time.

Ringling also has the Center for Elephant Conservation located in Florida. This is where their retired Asian elephants reside. Here is where they study elephant behavior and the conservation of them. They loan out elephants & semen to breeding programs worldwide as well as zoos. They currently care for about 70 elephants at the facility, the most recent addition is a male, Barak, born through artificial insemination on January 19, 2009.
