Winding Down...
There are several things that I'll miss this year when we leave Indio, the weather (of course), the shops on El Paseo, my desert girl friends, the petunias, the usual. But this year we've had something new in the park: Every Wednesday Madison Street Produce (http://www.madisonstproduce.com/) brings their deliciously fresh vegetables and fruit to the park. We've had the biggest, sweetest and juiciest strawberries from them this year. I've also bought their spinach, avocados, tomatoes (which are HUGE), and peppers - everything has been so good and fresh! I'll be anxious for our own farmer's markets to gear up for the year!
Ron & Judy & Lee and I took a ride the other day down past the Salton Sea to Niland. It's a fun ride and beautiful as well. It always amazes me to think that there's a land-locked salt water "sea"in the California desert! Our destination, though, was Salvation Mountain & Slab City. Salvation Mountain, or as we call it, Painted Mountain, is being "constructed" by a man who want to spread the word that God loves everyone. It's quite a sight to see! Slab City is a deconstructed and abandon Marine base where snowbirds come to squat in their RV's tents, or whatever, for the winter. Apparently there are some year-round residents as well; I can't imagine spending a summer there in the heat! There's no electricity or water service, it's strictly dry camping. Some of the "residents" do have solar panels set up...
We also took a ride up to Pioneertown, which was nearly razed by the Sawtooth Complex wildfire in 2006. There's still evidence from the fire as the desert still looks scorched. Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace was saved and it's the only place in town to go for a big juicy burger for lunch! It's a funky place that has old moose heads & license plate hanging on the wall. On week-end evenings they have entertainment, although we've never been there for anything but lunch.
I suppose it'll be nice to be back home at the Ranch, but it's really been a wonderful winter in the desert and it's always hard to leave!
